CAPTION COMPETITION
Glengyle, Campbeltown's newest re-distillery celebrated it's third birthday at the weekend with press tours and a big party in one of the warehouses.
Presided over by Frank McHardy and his sidekick Stuart Robertson - here posing for our caption competition.
Built by Frank for J & A Mitchell, the owners of nearby Springbank, the revived Distillery is a neat simple affair using two stills scrounged form the old Ben Wyvis Distillery.
We were offered a plethora of samples but unfortunately from an unhelpful range of wine casks so it is difficult to asses the character of the new three year old whisky. So we will pass judgement of a wee sample that was given us in our goodie-bag...
Kilkerran (for that is the trade name for the single malt from Glengyle Distillery), 3yo, 46%:
This is a big, oily and waxy spirit, uncompromising and I suspect typical of the old heavy alleged Campbeltown style. Under all the heavy, wet, coal-smoke is fruitiness, tobacco and brine. The taste reflects it's new-born infancy, with a long weighty sulphur finish.
I look forward to trying it again in a couple of years time.
For those planning ahead, Kilkerran will not be available until it is 8 years old.

A Price Guide - 2nd Edition - Martin Green
A handy reference guide to whisky prices realised at McTear's Glasgow Auction house over the past six years. Should be used judiciously when pricing a collectable, add buyer's premium of 15% and remember it is just one auction house. We need more price info like this, anyone doing one for eBay yet?
