LFW’s Bottling of the Year 2012

It’s taken me six weeks (so far) to write this tasting note - it’s been important to nail the emotion and joy of this particular bottle of whisky.

Long ago, I really-really rated the 15yo, 40% Bruichladdich bottled by the various previous owners (LFW price £32.90 in 1993). One of my top-top favourites. Despite being an unloved offering from a neglected distillery, produced by a variety of owners, all of whom were hard to like, or hate - or have any feelings for. Nonetheless the mature single malt from Bruichladdich was absolutely delicious, sitting in the complex category of single malt flavours.

For ten years we have watched the new management bugger-about with umpteen-and-then-some expressions; with wine, with wood, with smoke and with mirrors. My fear was that this, their new standard offering, their benchmark and my old talisman, would reflect some of that hither-and-thither stumbling.

My fear was unfounded. And with hindsight should never have been considered much, who could possibly forget the reason why they buy a distillery if that reason is because the whisky is bloody good?

And this is bloody good! Extra strength at bottling gives the impression of additional maturity and allows me to let myself consider that this Laddie Ten is as good as my inflated memory of the 15yo of old.

I’m so happy!

Quality and value - the definition of “House Malt”.

This is our principal House Malt and is a fine example of a Bourbon cask matured single Speyside malt.

Easily drinkable at any time of day this pleases both an experienced whisky drinker as well as showing the benefits of a great whisky to a novice. An ace even before considering the price.

On the Flavour Map Inverarity 10yo is a fine example of lighter whiskies in the lower left corner, combining delicacy and lightness, square D3

Inverarity Ancestral, sherry cask matured 14 years old 40%alc.

Complex, Rich & Delicate

Ancestral is a 14yo sherry cask matured single malt. It is ruby-dark, extremely smooth with great flavour and complexity, very slightly sherry-cloying in the mouth. A wonderful after dinner dram that as our flagship House Malt we have pinned our reputation on to, so it must be an ace!

Peaty - smoky! Islay style!

Not a single malt but a mix of four smoky-peaty whiskies from Islay (and so termed ‘blended malt’). Inverarity Islay fills the peaty-whisky section of the malt whisky flavour spectrum with the least expensive yet delicious bottle of Islay malt that we have.

Created for Islay fans there is a very emphatic phenolic and medicinal character - peat and iodine - classic Islay qualities; a good oiliness, powerful flavours yet also a breeze of fresh air, brace yourself for an ace!

The Macphunn 18yo 57% November 2009

Bottled November 2009

This fourth cask (dated November 2009) of a single sherry-matured Speysider at cask strength bottled for Sir Charles Maclean of Strachur, Loch Fyne.

As a counter to the last bottling which was as black as black is, this one glows from within like amber - the stone rather than amber the colour, a real shine!

Another big sherry-wood dram, but not over the top, so you can speculate that it's from American oak rather than European, I've no idea, but that seems a good, pointless discussion to start with, this is going to be a long and enjoyable evening...

Macphunn 'November 2009' (as described on the label to distinguish it from previous bottlings) is a single sherry butt with a whopping yield of 610 bottles. Inside there is golden syrup to begin with... A nice intro then the real drama starts with a tannic note that twists into an increasingly sherry-sulphury crescendo that never seems to level off - or end - until the swallow when the match-heads peak and the tongue is left as a well-sprung dance-floor for Indiana Jones to fandango! There is a smoky residue that fades with the credits.

Another boffo Macphunn, I'm taking one to share with my chums this evening, let speculation begin! I don't want to call all Macphunns 'ace' because it questions the accolade, but it's definitely boffo.
