With a powerful sulphur-smoke there is loads of sherry style here, rich and fruity, complex and darkly mysterious with a coal-tarry finish.

The 18 has replaced the 17 in the UK, the 17 will continue overseas or in doody free.

This is a new style of under-graduate age Bowmore, more sherry influence, richer, spicier and peatier than the 17 but still good (and still that distinctive Bowmore 'note'). I'll miss the 17 though it had a freshness that no other peaty Islay had.

[Blind tasting note from RJ during the SFWC:

SCORE: No Score

Nettles and vegetative including lavender and Twix®, biscuit and caramel I suppose. Nice and well balanced. To taste there is too much perfume, it's not whisky, adding water just makes it nasty, too horrible to continue. PLUS a finish that just won't go away - but that's blind tasting for you, must have been in a bad mood (sorry).

Oloroso sherry cask matured, limited edition from 39 casks.

Nose is a little quiet, and a little green too. On the palate there is an excellent smoke, not too heavy, just right intensity and good flavour. Long finish, for me it's a shame about that funny perfume at the start of the taste that becomes Love Hearts with water.

Final limited edition of different wood matured belters. The back label tells us "Rich Stewed fruit berries, sweet black cherries and hints of bitter dark chocolate underlined by a lighter Bowmore smokiness. Palate, warm and rounded, packed full of fruit flavors of brambles and damson jam followed by a subtle earthy port smoke".

What's port smoke?

Bowmore OB 25yo 43%alc.Bowmore OB 25yo 43%alc.

An eminently drinkable Bowmore, lots of sherry cask maturation in evidence.

[Blind tasting note from RJ during the SFWC:

Sherry-cherry sweetness, quite stickly-sickly with ginger-lettuce. Taste gives a good Highland style dram, well flavoured with a bit of smoke and citrus notes. Devastated by water leaving a bitter sulphur note to wash away. Very fragile, nice neat.

I did try this a while ago and recall it as being extremely good but notes fail me. However how about this tasting note from the Malt Maniacs:

95/100 points, a contender for 'whisky of the year' according to LMDW.

Bowmore 43 yo 1964 'White Bowmore' (42.8%, OB, 732 bottles, 2008) After the legendary ŒBlacks¹, here¹s the new ŒWhite¹, assembled from six bourbon casks (retails for 3,300 Euros a bottle). Colour: gold, not white (but white wine isn¹t white either, is it?) Nose: amazing, in seven letters. Fantabulous notes of tropical fruits (where to start? Mangos, grapefruits, passion fruits, kiwis, god knows what elseŠ) mingling with a very ŒIndian¹ blend of spices. Cardamom, caraway, ground ginger, nutmeg, green curryŠ Stunning, really. There¹s also these very maritime notes (kelp, iodine, wet beach) and these floral ones (lilies and peonies, beautifully heady here.) An amazing whisky no, rather a perfume from the very best makers¹. Mouth: frankly, I had thought it would all happen on the nose, but it¹s not the case at all.

Superb attack all on passion fruits (my mum would say ³buy passion fruits, it¹s cheaper²) and then mastic-flavoured Turkish delights, a little roasted argan oil, lemon pie, all kinds of soft spices, high-end lemon squash and, as expected, notes of oak, with a very pleasant and subtle bitterness as a signature. And there¹s well a little peat lingering somewhereŠ Finish:

probably not extremely bold but amazingly clean and straightforward for a short while, getting then very subtle and complex again. Whispers, but whispers for a very, very long time... Š Š Comments: is this an ³anti Black Bowmore²? Probably, as it¹s very subtle, complex and maybe sometimes a tad Œdiaphanous¹ but always very wonderful. And what a nose! The epitome of elegance as far as whisky is concerned. I¹d even dare to write that it¹s

(almost) worth its heavy price tag. - 95 points.

Bowmore Tempest OB 10yo 55.3%alc.Bowmore Tempest OB 10yo 55.3%alc.

Now all gone...

The first of a series of batches of cask strength 10yo.

I recall being given a dram of Bowmore bottled in the 1960s by the great Italian Collector Valenttino Zagatti, he rated it higher that the more recent bottlings and this Tempest indicates a return to style.

Creamy with a butterscotch on pastry aroma (and some witch-hazel that clears with a little time), the peat is slight and on the nose is more as from wood embers, water reveals fruit. The peat floods the tongue with a very slight and perfectly acceptable Bowmore perfume note. There is a great mouth-coating finish of gentle peat smoke and pepper.

This is Bowmore truly back on form and an ace. Super to have it back.
