Bruichladdich Organic 2003 OB 46%Abv.Bruichladdich Organic 2003 OB 46%Abv.

Smoky barley (unscented smoke), fat and juicy aroma and a sweet, smoky taste. Tastes organic too (hairy armpits and all), nice.

Bruichladdich Classic Edt_01 OB 46%Abv.Bruichladdich Classic Edt_01 OB 46%Abv.

A fresh typical (classic even) Laddie nose with a touch of fusil oil and ginger. This is good progress to great Bruichladdich but need more maturation to get rid of the ginger nuts that spoils all the floral, sea breezy, appley smokiness.

The blurb on the tin says this is ‘refreshingly free of “medicinal” overtones', which is true. I also find it refreshingly free of peat, relatively.

Smoke is the dominant element; tasted neat it is sensational akin to licking hot wood ash, great billows of it (I think that’s the collective noun for smokes). There is a little peat on the nose and in the dilute finish but I’m going back for some more pure smoke.

Bruichladdich Infinity OB 3rd Edition 50%Abv.Bruichladdich Infinity OB 3rd Edition 50%Abv.

'Infinity is a multi-vintage Bruichladdich designed by distilling legend Jim McEwan...'

Third in a series of preferential bottlings exclusively for us top-notch specialist retailers, and quite right too.

On first opening yesterday this was total fascination however, now a day later the startling fruity-no-peat-aroma-then-whopping-peat-yet-no-fruit-at-all taste has been oxidised away and there is now peaty whisky in the more usual sense.

So a new tasting note: On the nose, neat, there is high intensity peat masking the sherry-fruitiness, given time this comes through and with water becomes a lavendery perfume (oh-oh!). Tasted, it is soft, spirited, peaty, hot, bitter and with water some sweetness and that aforementioned oh-oh! perfume.

There is a long finish with a novel old-perished-plastic (musty boat-sheds) haaaa. (A new whisky term; ‘haaaa’ refers to the aroma picked up at the back of the face from the exhale several minutes after writing one’s notes. Put it in your lexicon now).

On the wonderful Diagonesian Malt Whisky Flavour Map - produced by Dave Broom and Diageo, I’d put the Bruichladdich Infinity in square: C9

Bruichladdich Octomore 2.2 Orpheus 5yo OB 61%Abv.Bruichladdich Octomore 2.2 Orpheus 5yo OB 61%Abv.

A 5yo heavily peated Octomore style Bruichladdich matured in Ch Petrus casks.

140 ppm at distillation and limited to 15,000 bottles.

Aware of how keen you lot are to learn of my pontifications I'm performing this sampling session on the Oban - Glasgow bus (to a boozy lunch).

I've tried Red Octomore a couple of times over the weekend, without pen, and my best description to date is "peat cordial".

Now with 'The Lamb lies down on broadway' (Genesis' prog-rock monsterpiece - but the right length for the voyage) piped into my lugs here is a final attempt at a definate note, I have a wee glass and a decanted miniature as my apperatus, and a grip on the seat in front to hold my glass while I iType, perfect!.

Peaty. Very-very oily. Fruity (lemons). Mostly oily-peat. I don't know how this has been polished off, these days it's better to taste without the USP wine-finish baggage, to report on the real merits of a dram - some posh wine that I've never heard of no doubt. Over the gums; more peat, great heat and some tingle. An oily swallow. Peat and bitter start to the finish, a smouldering bonfire haaa.

Water, (Volvic - I'm afraid) produces a fresh-field perfume but it's still peaty. (The bloke who has just sat next to me is giving me 'looks' but I'm not playing his game, the fug of peat about me must be raising curiosity, to say the least!) Water does not do much to reveal more but does make it more pleasant.

Conclusion. Very-very peaty cordial. Not my style at all but it has made the journey from Cairndow to Luss at 9am much more pleasant, oh look there's a bit left! Slainte!

Boring bit: on the Malt Whisky Flavour Map I'd put this in square E10, smoky.

Dave, please add the technical stuff.

A different aroma of tropical fruits – bananas and coconuts – (oaky tropical grass and nuts).

And that’s about it.

Not much whisky about it.

Definitely not much Bruichladdich about it.

I sample this during the fury of our peak trading season, exhausted and, more importantly, without notes, none of the Bruichladdich hyperbole or fluff. I am unaware of its value, age or lineage, £30 or £300, so let's see. The nose is very attractive, very weighty, reminiscent of the old untampered Bruichladdich of previous owners but considerably thicker.

A bit of sweet-and-sour, peppery spice and sewing-machine oil.

Taste neat is sweet, oaky, oily still and really too thick. A drop of water...

A bit more...

Blimey!, the substance of this whisky! Finally it is citrus, oak, ginger, with a good swallow and medium-long finish. An ace and more importantly great Bruichladdich style Bruichladdich. Buy it.

Now I know a bit more, it's a 23yo limited release of 4,900 bottles and was aged in rare "squat-hogsheads"; novel casks tested in the late 70s by US coopers seeking the optimum cask shape for modern storage. Fortuitously, the extra whisky-to-wood contact in these stumpy, Disney-like, experimental bourbon casks, imparted greater colour and flavour to the spirit, and how!

100% Bourbon cask matured.

This makes a refreshing change - Bruichladdich without any poncy wine influences.

Bubbles Bruich 'n bourbon out of the glass, very promising. Fresh, zesty and reassuring. Quite 'thick'

Perfect old style Bruichladdich though the extra strength and lack of chillfiltering make this heavier than the 'original' 15yo that we yearn for. However this is my favourite for 2009.

I’d suggest square G6 on the Whisky Flavour Map:

Bruichladdich PC8 OB 60.5%Abv.Bruichladdich PC8 OB 60.5%Abv.

Fourth release of Bruichladdich’s heavily peated (but not heaviest peated – see ‘Octomore’) variant, this time as an eight year old.

Here is instant peat and an absolutely fabulous whiff of cold wood-fire embers (a bit damp), the peat is throughout the experience with a little UHU glue (can I mention another trade mark here?). Tasted it is soft and light, all tongue engaging of peat and later bitter, a finish reminiscent of dark chocolate Mars bars. Water changes little about this, just makes the whole experience go much further. PC8 is winner of RMW’s democratically nominated Fabbo Fringe Magnet Award 2009.

Bruichladdich’s own blurb can be found here... [LINK]

On the Flavour map I’d put PC8 in square: E10
