LFW Bottling of the Year 2002

Bruichladdich 10yo The Laddie Ten OB 46%Abv. LFW's Bottling of the Year 2012Bruichladdich 10yo The Laddie Ten OB 46%Abv. LFW's Bottling of the Year 2012

LFW’s Bottling of the Year 2012

It’s taken me six weeks (so far) to write this tasting note - it’s been important to nail the emotion and joy of this particular bottle of whisky.

Long ago, I really-really rated the 15yo, 40% Bruichladdich bottled by the various previous owners (LFW price £32.90 in 1993). One of my top-top favourites. Despite being an unloved offering from a neglected distillery, produced by a variety of owners, all of whom were hard to like, or hate - or have any feelings for. Nonetheless the mature single malt from Bruichladdich was absolutely delicious, sitting in the complex category of single malt flavours.

For ten years we have watched the new management bugger-about with umpteen-and-then-some expressions; with wine, with wood, with smoke and with mirrors. My fear was that this, their new standard offering, their benchmark and my old talisman, would reflect some of that hither-and-thither stumbling.

My fear was unfounded. And with hindsight should never have been considered much, who could possibly forget the reason why they buy a distillery if that reason is because the whisky is bloody good?

And this is bloody good! Extra strength at bottling gives the impression of additional maturity and allows me to let myself consider that this Laddie Ten is as good as my inflated memory of the 15yo of old.

I’m so happy!

Tasting notes? Jumble up these any way: Complex, delicious, lightish, aromatic, warm, gotta-take-a-sip, mixed, exciting, varied, oiliness, hints, fresh, whiff, breeze & now drink.

An ace dram, oh joy!, whisky emotion, join in.

'Infinity is a multi-vintage Bruichladdich designed by distilling legend Jim McEwan...'

Third in a series of preferential bottlings exclusively for us top-notch specialist retailers, and quite right too.

On first opening yesterday this was total fascination however, now a day later the startling fruity-no-peat-aroma-then-whopping-peat-yet-no-fruit-at-all taste has been oxidised away and there is now peaty whisky in the more usual sense.

So a new tasting note: On the nose, neat, there is high intensity peat masking the sherry-fruitiness, given time this comes through and with water becomes a lavendery perfume (oh-oh!). Tasted, it is soft, spirited, peaty, hot, bitter and with water some sweetness and that aforementioned oh-oh! perfume.

There is a long finish with a novel old-perished-plastic (musty boat-sheds) haaaa. (A new whisky term; ‘haaaa’ refers to the aroma picked up at the back of the face from the exhale several minutes after writing one’s notes. Put it in your lexicon now).

Bruichladdich PC9 OB 59.2%Abv.Bruichladdich PC9 OB 59.2%Abv.

An Ataireachd Ard: The Surge of the Sea

Limited to 6000 bottles

A smoky bacon sarnie with a cuppa strong.

A very soft and warm aroma that settles to a smoky incense, Lapsang Souchong tea, slightly off shell-fish and good old TCP, then butchers block, bacon and bread. Water lifts rubberised peat and cereal-meaty elements, medicinal, mash and parsnips. Getting the impression of something very complex yet?

Once in the mouth there is great heat n’ peat, an open fire with hard, mechanically compressed, high calorific peat (no sulphur). It ruffles the bitter back of the tongue and is most remarkable for it’s long-long finish.

A billipeaty dram that’s hard to distinguish from the trillipeated Octomore, an ace for those of a peat filled affection.

Bruichladdich Octomore 4_167 5yo OB 62.5%Abv.Bruichladdich Octomore 4_167 5yo OB 62.5%Abv.

The peatiest whisky ever – again!

More numerical superiority on the peatiness stake, no one has claimed 167ppm phenols before but the numbers are only one element of the experience.

The aroma is initially very unusual; a black hole of lightness swirling about a tight vortex of dense peat. Blackcurrants, lemons and fresh parsley radiate out, surrounded by rays of peat. Overall it is clean and vigorous.

In the mouth, the harrr fills the embouchure, there is a harmony on the sweet and bitter, and a coal-dusty swallow.

Water makes it more accessible but does not change it to much degree, a little more caster sugar and wood fire maybe.

Long finish mind.

Square D9 (which is interesting as the previous was ‘Light and Smoky’ yet this seems less peaty – just goes to show how subjective all this tosh is).

Bruichladdich OB 16yo 46%alc. Bourbon CasksBruichladdich OB 16yo 46%alc. Bourbon Casks

100% Bourbon cask matured.

This makes a refreshing change - Bruichladdich without any poncy wine influences.

Bubbles Bruich 'n bourbon out of the glass, very promising. Fresh, zesty and reassuring. Quite 'thick'

Perfect old style Bruichladdich though the extra strength and lack of chillfiltering make this heavier than the 'original' 15yo that we yearn for. However this is my favourite for 2009.

I’d suggest square G6 on the Whisky Flavour Map:

Bruichladdich PC An Turas Mor OB 46%Abv.Bruichladdich PC An Turas Mor OB 46%Abv.

A multi-vintage version of this Port Charlotte An Turas Mor from Bruichladdich

An oily peaty aroma, some starch (cut spuds) and briny plastic which some fresh peaty offerings seem to be giving these days. The taste is faithful with the starch more like barley. A peaty, uncomplicated dram with a chocolate finish that lingers a good while.

Bruichladdich PC8 OB 60.5%Abv.Bruichladdich PC8 OB 60.5%Abv.

Fourth release of Bruichladdich’s heavily peated (but not heaviest peated – see ‘Octomore’) variant, this time as an eight year old.

Here is instant peat and an absolutely fabulous whiff of cold wood-fire embers (a bit damp), the peat is throughout the experience with a little UHU glue (can I mention another trade mark here?). Tasted it is soft and light, all tongue engaging of peat and later bitter, a finish reminiscent of dark chocolate Mars bars. Water changes little about this, just makes the whole experience go much further. PC8 is winner of RMW’s democratically nominated Fabbo Fringe Magnet Award 2009.

Bruichladdich’s own blurb can be found here... [LINK]

On the Flavour map I’d put PC8 in square: E10
Smoky (in a jazz-club sense, as in mmmmmm-smokin’).

The Botanist Islay Dry Gin OB 46%Abv.The Botanist Islay Dry Gin OB 46%Abv.

First release from the “hey!-aren’t-we-awfully-clever” department of the Scotch Whisky industry. A release of 15k bottles of the first production of Bruichladdich gin produced from the Lomond still salvaged from Inverleven Distillery. What a shame they didn’t call it Islay Dry London Gin, that’s the sort of confusion they delight in.

Botanist Islay Dry Gin is (the label assures us) awfully clever and awfully different in its production. Thankfully it’s also very much like good gin. We won’t be stocking this generally but have some now for those who are interested.
