Very limited and so restricted to 1 per person

Sampled under agreeable but hectic conditions I thought this another superb dram. Fruit, vanilla and esters - and everything else - on the nose. A scrawled note included ‘pink candy’ and chocolate finish.

The first time I had Caol Ila was at the distillery, (long ago), I then drove back across the island, abandoned the hire car and then cycled 12 miles back to Bowmore. After the first pint (at the Lochside), I returned to the bar for another and could still taste the Caol Ila!

Oily, Islay with a very long finish!

This new bottling is most similar to the old 15yo OB-d 'Fauna & Flora' expression. Of the three new OB releases this is the most pungent with a taste including rubber, briny fishing nets and smoky bonfires.

We have loved all the previous 'unpeated' Caol Ilas and this one is better still! 12 years ago Caol Ila was charged with using unpeated malt for another blending house and this stock is part of that now cancelled order, thank heavens for that!

Less than 6,000 bottles that won't last long once word gets out how good it is. It's clean, very clean in aroma, like a light cleansing spirit that clears the nostrils yet with a degree of light oil, so refined!

Although it's 'unpeated' it's hard to ignore the suggestion it's Caol Ila, is that peat I taste? No but I don't believe it, it's so Caol Ila there must be peat in there somewhere but I can't actually find it. I do get the signature maltiness, barley and starched fresh linen.

Then the sweetness erupts. Wasn't expecting that…

Ace, no arguments.

Loch Fyne Whiskies Bottling of the year 2003!

Softer than the 12 with more wood influence, I like it but many prefer the big smokiness of the 12yo.

This is more complex and better as a whisky but probably not a Caol Ila fan's fave. Tight and round. Apples & pears, floral, Parma violets, oak (lots), card, must, grass and a wee reek of old fish.

A full-blown western whisky, including germoline, diesel and a corridor of surgical spirit. Unusual levels of (clean) woodiness from the middle well into the long finish.

Here’s another magnificent OB Caol Ila 25yo and a truly magnificent Islay Single Malt.

Inside there is Caol Ila with floral notes, Caol Ila with burnt bits of flowers, oily Caol Ila with the excitement and fascination of a big, busy, untidy, fishing harbour (like Mallaig further up the coast); a skim of oil, a reek of fishing boats and stray diesel (and that huge seal bobbin’ about in the middle).

Not too carried away am I?

To taste the players are, in order of appearance; sweet, fruity and peaty but Prof. Sweet and Ms. Fruity are killed off before the end of the first scene, victims of smoke inhalation... Superb!

Distillers Editions are single malt whiskies that have been taken from traditional whisky casks and transferred to a second type of cask for further maturation.

Here the Master Distiller has hand-selected a small number of casks for DOUBLE MATURING in cask wood previously maturing dark Moscatel producing a quietened Caol Ila, sweetened and more fruity than the norm, not much smoke neat but plenty with water we found a flash of candy shop and characteristically long finish but very cool, a worthwhile alternative Caol Ila.
