Distillery Profile

Taste rating:4

Region: Highland, north.

Oranges, rich, spicy and growing. High regard.

Owner: Whyte & Mackay

Dalmore S 1990 19yo 59.0%alc. [Black Tin]Dalmore S 1990 19yo 59.0%alc. [Black Tin]

Distilled: 11 September 1990

Bottled: 12 April 2010

Matured in Sherry Butt 9421 and limited to 477 bottles

Quite pale for a first fill sherry cask. A nose of treacle, toffee, hand-rolling tobacco (but not Old Holborn) some esters and lots of promise, this is going to be good. The neat taste is (at best) very surprising, not like the promising nose, there is lots of cloves and power but not at all like the nose, a little pleasant perfume at the back. With water the nose reflects the neat taste but the taste is as good as the neat aroma.

So smell neat and drink wet!

A signatory independent single cask strength bottling.

I endured a session of MacKillop's Choice tastings a while ago and while all good this was the absolute ace for me. My notes are (ahem) smudged but I recall it had all the delicious Dalmore orange notes and lots of depth and complexity.

New presentation of Dalmores starts with a limited edition of 64yo with a recomended price of £100,000 for one of the two numbered bottles.

However here the new presentation finishes with a re-vamp of the 12yo by upping the sherry cask ration from a third to half. Not tried it yet, comes in a particularly wide carton so no shop keeper is going to be very happy about that.

Well packaged, well travelled dram.

'In 1263 the ancestor of Clan Mackenzie saved King Alexander III from being gored by a stag with a single arrow. The grateful king granted him the right to bear a stag's head in his coat of arms, with the motto "Help the King" (Cuidich 'n'Righ, in the Gaelic language). The Dalmore distillery was long owned by the Mackenzie family, and every bottle of The Dalmore is adorned with this noble emblem: a stag's head, with twelve pounts to its antlers, signifying a "Royal".

A reminder of our heroic past and an inspiration for all who taste our single Highland malt.

Tasting Notes:

This luxurious aged malt is the result of decades maturation in a variety of wine casks. Aged aromatic Oloroso and Madeira butts provide great backbone and a structure of crushed almonds and rich citrus fruits. The rich Port and Marsala woods add hints of wild berries and fleshy plums. Warm vanilla notes of creamy toffee from the aged Bourbon barrells combine eloquently with the majestic whispers of ripe red fruits offered up by Cabernet Sauvignon barriques. Complex, characterful and craved by connoisseurs.'

There you'd think I'd made that up, but I didn't

A leather case bigger than my fireside slipper box. Smells sensational - but that's the leather boxes for me, not tried the whisky, which is as dark as a Smartie tube full of rubies.

Distilled 1966, 1,000 bottles, probably quite nice...

'Time is at the heart of this unique expression. The Dalmore has the oldest maturing stocks of any single Highland malt whisky and, with spirit dating back to 1868, 1878, 1926, 1939, it's no wonder that our fifty year old has excited connoisseurs, gourmats and collectors across the world.

Presented in a unique hand-blown crystal decanter, only 191 10cl bottles have been released worldwide.

Honey gold in colour with a complex balance of soft fleshy fruits. Old English marmalade, ripe bananas, treacle toffee and fruitcake on the nose. Warming sherry, oak and citrus orange is complemented by a finish of crushed almonds, warm spice and cinnamon.'

Maximum “wooooh!” effect; a delightful presentation of a few drops of an ancient gathering of whiskies.

Please note that this is a 10cl sized bottle.

As not many of these little beauties will get opened we thought we’d take on that task.

Distinctly orange about the nose with lots of very old things; warehouses, sea lockers, musty stuff. Quiet and closed to begin with but after a while it brightens up, a shower on a herbaceous border, later still; smoke and caramelised orange peel.

On taste this ol’ lag punches its way to the bitter at first then there is a sweet orange rush to marmalade on burnt toast, sherbet and a tannic swallow to an engaging Orangeina swallow. Very worthwhile.

You really should open one...

It’s eight weeks since I was given a taster bottle of this Dalmore and it has been very hard to leave some for sharing in the shop, it is our first ace bottling from Dalmore, an appreciation in part due to the 46% bottling strength.

This is a luscious whisky, 11 years in American white wood followed by six in port have created a creamy-smooth dram, very inviting. There is a lot going on, plums and feints (honey and tobacco), port-and-whisky flavours. Water sprays floral perfumes like a shower in the sun, sweet and entirely luscious. Ace.

On the flavour map it’s in square I 7
on the rich side of Rich and Smoky.
