Minty and light. New bottlings are well sherried.

Owner: Signatory Vintage Scotch Whisky Co.

Edradour OB 10yo 40%alc.Edradour OB 10yo 40%alc.

This re-modelled Edradour has been influenced by an increased sherry wood content, much of the enchanting creamy pepermintiness remains and is a very enjoyable dram. Well suited for sherrywood matured fans.

Edradour OB 12yo 46%alc. CaledoniaEdradour OB 12yo 46%alc. Caledonia

A rich flavoursome dram with a good prickle and warmth and a lovely swallow and finish. Water adds lots of ginger and beefiness.

Bottled to celebrate Dougie Maclean’s great song which we also thought worth celebrating (by naming something important to us).

Edradour OB Bourbon Decanter 2003 57.4%alc.Edradour OB Bourbon Decanter 2003 57.4%alc.

Limited cask strength release of 1,820 bottles, sorry decanters, of Edradour’s all-bourbon matured single malt and what a honey it is!

We don’t normally mention the colour of a dram here, but this one is a captivating light new gold, quite distracting. The aroma is of clean honeyed spirit, purified beeswine. Tasted neat it is sweet, juicy and estery. Rich and weighty and some elements of light oak (beech) with cloves in the swallow. The finish is long and rinses itself. Best neat I think, water gives wet card and slight smoke.

Ignore the age, it has been selling well over the past couple of Christmassy weeks, matches the excellent sherry matured decanter below. And unanimously an ace!

On the Flavour Map it’s in square G4
Complex, Rich & Delicate. Yummy-honey!

Edradour OB Sherry Decanter 1997 56.1%alc.Edradour OB Sherry Decanter 1997 56.1%alc.

Single sherry cask bottling of Edradour from the new owner. Nice decanter style bottle, sherry-rich oaky tea-caddys, sweet and floral with a nice bass note. Strong, round and powerful with a pleasant perfume (parma violets and lavender). Water reveals a little smoke and confirms a suspicion of some must.

Very good and with that presentation ideal for lurking on the sideboard waiting for the cigars (my boy).

Ballechin #6 (peated Edradour) OB 46%alc.Ballechin #6 (peated Edradour) OB 46%alc.

Is this the best Ballechin yet?

Certainly the cleanliness of this entirely Bourbon-wood sixth release (limited to 6,000) pleases all who have tried it so far.

Neat the nose gives barley, gum and peat, it’s sweet and typical of a mainland peated dram (no maritime notes). Hot coals, geraniums, aviation fuel (or something similar), fruit, chocolate. There is lots’ going on, so much that any suggestion can easily be imagined and confirmed. Water quietens it all down but is worthwhile if only to give the senses a rest.

Tasted it is initially dry, later it’s juicy. Clear peat and sherbet lemons and a swallow like inhaling strands of Golden Virginia hand-rolling ‘baccy. It’s chocolate and nutty and smooth and still peaty overall. The finish is salty, (table-salt not sea-salt) and finally there is an earthy, salty residue.

Square C9 on the Flavour Map:
on the smoky side of Light and Smoky, (close to Complex, light and smoky).

Ballechin #5 (peated Edradour) OB 46%alc.Ballechin #5 (peated Edradour) OB 46%alc.

The Festival of Ballechin, here at Loch Fyne Whiskies, celebrates the arrival of a new bottling and we are clearing up after the arrival of the latest of Andrew Symington & Edradour’s ‘Discovery Series’. Much-peated Ballechin #5 is hewn from a Marsala cask offered at 46%, unchillfiltered and, as it says on the tube, is “natural colour” - unlike the colour of the tube, which is not natural.

Contrasting with #4 (from Oloroso sherry wood) the sweet, fortified, Italian wine cask has not contributed much to the whisky; it’s primarily peaty, not so much neat on the nose but when tasted and nosed with water it’s very peaty. There are distinct fruit notes (as cherry Tunes® - menthol sweets) and other esters with water added. Overall it’s sweet peat and will be another big seller in the shop - after the application of a petit gout...

On the flavour map it’s in D10:
on the smoky side of Light and Smoky

Ballechin #4 (peated Edradour) OB 46%alc.Ballechin #4 (peated Edradour) OB 46%alc.

The fourth release of heavily peated single malt from Edradour marches on with an all first–fill Oloroso cask, in release three (port cask) we saw the onset of mature whisky and that was one of the shops consistent best-sellers on taste and despite the price.

Ballechin IV is about 7 years old, any more time may spoil the magic.

Neat it is closed peatiness with berry-fruits and quite brackish. Under that is a distinctive surgical spirits element with linseed, moss water and oddly, Madeira. Water gives an impression of smouldering tyre-dump then fetid bathrooms (potties, nappy-gear and stray piss). Despite this wholly accurate description this is a very enjoyable smoky dram. Nice long fumy finish and a super burp.

Well Carol, I’ll put this in square I9 of the Diageo Flavour Map:
Rich / Smoky

Ballechin #3 (peated Edradour) OB 46%alc.Ballechin #3 (peated Edradour) OB 46%alc.

Third release of Edradour's peaty ‘Discovery Series’ this time entirely matured in a port cask. The first two have sold extremely well in the shop after a taste by virtue of their extreme peat flavours.

My notes: Like walking into Halford's. (Eh?).

Yep, a smell of fresh bike tyres, then inner tubes and French chalk (‘scuse me?). Coal smoke, some treacle and then with time very fruity. To taste it is very quiet and well balanced, smooth with a peaty inhale and peat that coats the walls of the mouth. Not quite as peaty-powerful as the previous two but bound to be a good seller.

On the Malt Whisky Flavour map it would go at the top of C9
Light / Smoky

Ballechin #2 (peated Edradour) OB 46%alc.Ballechin #2 (peated Edradour) OB 46%alc.

The second limited (6,000) release of Edradour's heavily peated variant, this time entirely matured in a Maderia cask presumably for 5 years (don't let the age put you off).

The first edition has been very well received on tasting and this has more of what the first had.

More peat, more complexity and more sweetness, a huge mouthfeel.

Those who appreciated the younger Ardbegs will be impressed.
