Glenury-Royal

Glenury Royal OB 1970 40yo 59.4%alc.

There's not many chances left to secure a bottle from this distillery closed in 1983. For a long time Glenury has been a LFW favourite for selling for drinking, typically a big hairy highlander but with a wisdom that Queen Victoria would appreciate.

Tip; if your tasting this mountain of a dram use a huge snifter, it has a big aroma that needs a big glass to contain it all in, anything up to a suitably shaped wardrobe will do.

Anyone ever sniffed toasted tea caddies? Well you'll recognise them here, the headspace in the bowl is deep and rich, faintly surgical (that's Highland peat for you) and then a menthol or eucalyptus note. Water emphasises the honey and produces cooked fruit and aniseed.

Taste it, get the honey, mint, wine and then oak, consider it to be very well balanced on the receptors on the tongue, marvel at how oily it is and agree this really is delicious. The finish is long and coating, warming and juicy-juicy.

An enjoyable piece of history, I hope all bottles are opened and enjoyed.
