Glenmorangie Artein OB 15yo 46%alc.Glenmorangie Artein OB 15yo 46%alc.

Juicy, hold the nose, tip in and tumble about in the mouth!

Copper-amber in hue , this is an accessorising of Glenmoragie's delicacy with Italian bruiser Super Tuscan red wine casks. The latest of Dr. Bill's 'Private Edition' offerings of finished boutique drams. As a pioneer of finishing, The 'Mo deserves attention and full respect on this otherwise dubious practice. This one works - but only by sacrificing the quiet charm of the 'Mo.

The aroma is rich and syrupy; dried fruits, sultanas and raisins and candy-fruit. Sweet-feinty (plastic) and buttermilk. The fruit-syrup comes and goes and I found a little match-striker (but no associated sulphur) and happily no wine, just rich fruit. Latterly a very distinct earthy element came; the blurb on the box refers to the stony terroir in Tuscany so I'll defer to a 'baked earth' element.

Tasting is where this really works; the syrup and the sweet fruit stick like paint and turning this over and over (three top-coats) hugs the mouthparts for a sensational gob-smacking licking.

I found a unique bread-yeast note in the finish, by-the-way.

On the Flavour Map it is square I5

Ben Nevis (McDonald's Traditional) OB 46%alc. Ben Nevis (McDonald's Traditional) OB 46%alc.

A peaty Ben Nevis, as good as the best - from anywhere!

My LFW Descriptors Mat tells me this pale straw in colour.

The aroma is oily, fishy (salmon flesh) with pipe shag-smoke. It covers more parts of the flavour spectrum than most, leather and oilskins (from feinty). Woody notes manifest as orange zest and cinnamon. Wine notes are brown sauce, port and white chocolate and esters are represented with bananas and general fruit. There is also marmite-gravy and biro ink. Over all this is a canopy of smoke, all-covering but masking little. It's a smoky/kippery/lint smoke, lacking Islay brine and just how you imagine a proper West Coast mainland whisky should taste like.

The overall neat aroma note is, in short, "spectacular!"

The packaging is not at all clear. This is a single malt from Ben Nevis made up of present style Ben Nevis mixed with some more heavily peated Ben Nevis. The purpose is to replicate the style of whisky sold in the 1880s, I can't vouch for the quality of the forgery but it is a brilliant old-fashioned style of whisky. Limited to about 700 individually numbered bottles this is a gem to-be-sure.

Tasted there is instant smoke, it's peaty-smoke, TCP peaty. With an oily texture, there's wet burnt wood (rained on ashes) and oily smoky oysters served with Lapsang Souchong tea. With a long coating finish of smoke, this is as good as the best whisky from anywhere.

Water reveals licorice and more of the above but I enjoyed it most just neat.

Clearly an Ace for me, on the Flavour map I have it in square D8

Abhainn Dearg OB 2008 50cl 46%alc. with additional FreeWee™ tasterAbhainn Dearg OB 2008 50cl 46%alc. with additional FreeWee™ taster

First ever bottling from this new distillery on the Isle of Lewis, limited to 2011 bottles and uniquely boxed in a carvel built teak box.

I know little of how this toddler was produced, something about a fish hatchery and homemade stills but I do know the area, it’s wind-swept and interesting and this 3yo whisky from a brand new distillery is very interesting to taste.

By law, Scotch is required to mature for three years as this it the time it takes for the oak to extract undesirable compounds from the spirit, during these three years (and long beyond) the wood also contributes character.

In this “Red-River” 3yo the aroma is initially vanilla and caramel and then dawns as custard. Next comes cereal store, then roasted grain. There are no off-notes in a spirit that is primarily cereal and wood. Adding water reveals its youth, a good example of young spirit with all the nasties extracted – but still very palatable.

Tasted there is a slight element of some kind of volatile hydrocarbon fuel. It’s slightly sour and sweet with a perfectly acceptable level of harshness. Once all that is settled the taste and finish are of chocolate.

Having tasted this I have huge hopes for its future. Here is adequately matured new single malt with no shortcomings; relatively simple in character, a sketch on a canvas of great potential. Most enjoyed neat but definitely not a ‘session’ dram – yet!

Too early to place on the Flavour Map, currently in the light and delicate quarter.

Another peated variant from Glen Keith made with less peat than Craigduff and almost none now.

Very fruity, soft, sweet, with an oily (bicycle oil) swallow. Pleasing, long finish that gets fruitier with a slight spent-match flourish. Nice.

An all-round good dram with a little of everything in the fruit, smoke and chocolate boxes.

Initially there is smoke, (cordite - as spent fireworks), fruit and oak. The opening smoke disperses quickly raising fascination. It’s well balanced, there is nothing dominant and swallowing brings fruit, smoke and, heather, yes heather.

Johnnie Walker OB Double Black 40%alc.Johnnie Walker OB Double Black 40%alc.

One of the peatiest blends.

Comparisons with Black Label are inevitable but Double Black stands alone as a heavily peated blend most noted for it’s long Caolilaish finish. Comparison emphasises the Mortlachy fruitiness of 12yo.

Labouring the musical parallels (see Black Label); if JWBL is Who’s Next - the sum of many parts - then this should match the mini-opera A Quick One, but it doesn’t so I’ve fixed it to Who Are You? – the track not the album. (“What on earth is he on about?” – you ask).

Available again after a long absence...

Loch Fyne Whiskies Bottling of the year 2003!

Softer than the 12 with more wood influence, I like it but many prefer the big smokiness of the 12yo.

This is more complex and better as a whisky but probably not a Caol Ila fan's fave. Tight and round. Apples & pears, floral, Parma violets, oak (lots), card, must, grass and a wee reek of old fish.

Rich / Smoky

[Blind tasting note from RJ during the SFWC:

A full-blown western whisky, including germoline, diesel and a corridor of surgical spirit. Unusual levels of (clean) woodiness from the middle well into the long finish.

A super whisky experience that improves with time to wonderful.

A rich oaky aroma... (could this be sherry oak? – we’re only told ‘hogsheads’ on the label which implies not). A rich oaky aroma with vanilla and esters as golden syrup and acid drops. There is a slight vegetative note (bran) and overall the air in the glass is sweet.

To taste it is very well balanced over all the taste buds on the tongue, sweet oak with plenty of whisky-fizz, buzzing in fact. Complex insomuch that it is difficult to describe in an anoraky way. There are no off notes but there is a very long, well matures whisky finish, with time this progresses from excellent to absolute ace.

A bizarre EXPERIMENTAL distillation of moderately peated malt and concentrated water at Glen Keith Distillery. Until now unknown.

Super! A nose of maturity, round with a primary of fino sherry and a little fishy, water reveals some peat. Taste is sherry oak (water reveals nuts). Distinctive peat on the swallow and the start of the exceptionally long finish, which fades over yonks as balanced sherry, and peat, as youd expect from a sherry matured peaty dram of this age.

A 'small parcel' of four casks available as presumably a one-off, worth hoarding and opening.

Quite pale for a first fill sherry cask. A nose of treacle, toffee, hand-rolling tobacco (but not Old Holborn) some esters and lots of promise, this is going to be good. The neat taste is (at best) very surprising, not like the promising nose, there is lots of cloves and power but not at all like the nose, a little pleasant perfume at the back. With water the nose reflects the neat taste but the taste is as good as the neat aroma.

So smell neat and drink wet!
