This is the fifth facsimile reprint of this fabulous book. First published in 1888, it is both a travelogue and a study of our emerging industry. This enlarged second Birllinn edition features a fascinating photograph of the great man (for the first time) and is properly bound with dust cover and gilt page edges, classy or what?

Added this time is an additional 160 pages taken from four extremely rare booklets he subsequently published, one so rare the only known copy is a much-tashed photocopy, but we've brushed it up.

Also has an introduction by yours truly but don't let that put you off.

Rare Malts: Facts, Figures and Taste by Swedish malt whisky authority and enthusiast Ulf Buxrud was published on 9 November and launched the same day at a reception hosted in London by the world's most celebrated gunsmiths, James Purdey & Sons.

The luxuriously produced hardback book is a 176-page fully illustrated account of all the 36 whiskies featured in Diageo's legendary Rare Malts Selection series, and a detailed history of the whole series.

Each entry contains historical and technical data (some never published before) on each malt and its distillery. There is also an extensive scientific chapter on organoleptic whisky tasting.

The cover carries a photograph by Graeme Wallace of the old Port Ellen distillery.

The annual Rare Malts Selection series of unusual and limited edition malts was drawn from the dwindling output of distilleries closed long ago and from old stocks of working distilleries. It ran for ten years, from 1995 to 2005, when it was superseded by the Special Releases programme.

Guests at the launch were regaled with two of the featured Rare Malts: Caol Ila 23yo, and Banff 21yo.

Whisky writer Charlie MacLean says in his foreword: "I have written nine books about Scotch, but still learned a lot from Ulf's text!".
