Ballechin #5 (peated Edradour) OB 46%alc.

The Festival of Ballechin, here at Loch Fyne Whiskies, celebrates the arrival of a new bottling and we are clearing up after the arrival of the latest of Andrew Symington & Edradour’s ‘Discovery Series’. Much-peated Ballechin #5 is hewn from a Marsala cask offered at 46%, unchillfiltered and, as it says on the tube, is “natural colour” - unlike the colour of the tube, which is not natural.

Contrasting with #4 (from Oloroso sherry wood) the sweet, fortified, Italian wine cask has not contributed much to the whisky; it’s primarily peaty, not so much neat on the nose but when tasted and nosed with water it’s very peaty. There are distinct fruit notes (as cherry Tunes® - menthol sweets) and other esters with water added. Overall it’s sweet peat and will be another big seller in the shop - after the application of a petit gout...

Superb! A mix of youngish, heavily peated Jura with more typical style of greater ages.

This gives a slightly stronger than normal nose but a big blast of peat and sea-salt in the taste. An ace!

With a powerful sulphur-smoke there is loads of sherry style here, rich and fruity, complex and darkly mysterious with a coal-tarry finish.

LFW bottling for 1998. Ace. Superb. Excellent.

Very well balanced, excellent, smokey-sulphury inhale, sweet tingle in the finish then bitter with a suggestion of umami. A fascinating whisky, well balanced and all tongue engaging, if you want to experience umami try the mid-finish of HP18.

The T10 was my first love, now I'm besotted by a more mature honey. Sensational!

I tried this over a briny weekend afloat a while ago and thought I preferred the 10 for it's uncompromising power but now, tucked up ashore, this is my new, more mellow, sweetheart. Ace.

Another small release form the distillery owners, not long ago this was well below £200, now look!

This is an ace whisky, quiet at first, TCP, shaving soap and medicinal-peat, really lovely. Then there is experiences of waxiness; thick waxed olde worlde tea-roome tables and Grenham bogs (that school has been knocked down now so don't go looking for it, just imagine 7 - 13yo boys - alright don't). Tasting this Brora is soft and peaty shorelineness; all tongue coating and stimulating sweet honeyness with a long finish (into next week). Ace
