Distillery Profile

Taste rating:1

Region: Lowland

Soft, smooth & creamy. High regard.

Owner: Morrison Bowmore

Auchentoshan OB Classic 40%alc. Auchentoshan OB Classic 40%alc.
Appropriately named lowland malt, a very pleasing appetiser that is well matured and well balanced with butter and lemon, fresh and grassy with an oaky swallow and a warm creamy finish. Ace.

Auchentoshan OB Three Wood [new style] 43%alc. Auchentoshan OB Three Wood [new style] 43%alc.
A nose of sweet bananas and associated vanilla that freshens with time, on the taste it is distinctly winey with (gun?) oil. Some sherry tannin in the swallow. Overall surprisingly tight and closed.

On the Malt Whisky Flavour map I'd put this about square H4:
Rich / Delicate

Another great Auchentoshan. Rich oak but not too much, floral and a grind of black pepper. Some smoke-like-bitterness with rich berries and the tar I enjoy from a sherry cask. A soft nicely balanced and fruity dram with a great long fizzy/sweetie finish. Almost an ace.

C6 on the Malt Whisky Flavour map in my opinion.
Complex / Light

Nose is great, rich spiciness, caramel and then some coal gas (I happen to like the smell of coal gas). However the initial taste is a carbolic prickle and unbalanced that spoiled the dram but I did have very high hopes for this. The finish is long with a style of soft 'English' chocolate (too much milk for perfectionists but bloody nice).

Auchentoshan OB 10yo 40%alc. Auchentoshan OB 10yo 40%alc.

Smooth, sweet & creamy. The most typical of the remaining lowland distilleries.

Distilled three times for improved smoothness, quite unique, a favorite. High regard.

On the Malt Whisky Flavour Map we reckon this belongs in square: C4

Auchentoshan OB Three Wood [old style] 43%alc. Auchentoshan OB Three Wood [old style] 43%alc.

Hardly an example of a lowland malt but in a recent blind tasting I aplauded its deepth of character.

Bourbon wood matured Auchy with Oloroso and Pedro Ximinex matured stock (cf Lagavulin Distillers Edition).

Result is tobacco on the nose and plenty of European sherryish oak.

[Blind tasting note from RJ during the SFWC:

Rich unctuous and slightly tobacco sap. Sweet, well matures European oak taste, bitter with some smoke. A medium finish. Starts well. Score 7.75/10]

Auchentoshan OB 16yo 53.7%alc. Auchentoshan OB 16yo 53.7%alc.

Limited to 4800 bottles. First fill Bourbon barrels.

Following on from the (in my opine) disappointing Oloroso release of last year here is something worthwhile. There is lots going on: oaky vanillas and lemon, (with a bit of poo, hay, honeysuckle, bacon bites and more). A soft and genteel whisky but with lots of complexity.

Auchentoshan OB Oloroso 18yo 55.8%alc. Auchentoshan OB Oloroso 18yo 55.8%alc.

Limited release of 4,800.

A disappointment, not to heavy sherry (a mix of first and second fill casks), a sour note on the nose not supported by a dry chalkiness in the tongue, very one-dimensional. Further spoiled with a long persistent finish. We were so looking forward to trying this.

Auchentoshan OB 21yo [old style] 43%alc. Auchentoshan OB 21yo [old style] 43%alc.

Orange peel and some spicy elements but over-all too expensive.

Footnote, despit my searing marketing insight they have put the price up another £5. Cads!
