| | Caol Ila OB 12yo 43%alc.
The first time I had Caol Ila was at the distillery, (long ago), I then drove back across the island, abandoned the hire car and then cycled 12 miles back to Bowmore. After the first pint (at the Lochside), I returned to the bar for another and could still taste the Caol Ila! Oily, Islay with a very long finish! This new bottling is most similar to the old 15yo OB-d 'Fauna & Flora' expression. Of the three new OB releases this is the most pungent with a taste including rubber, briny fishing nets and smoky bonfires. Flavour Map Ref: D10 Light / Smoky
[Blind tasting note from RJ during the SFWC:SCORE: 2/5 The first time I tried it, at the end of an evening, my scribbles merely question if I like whisky at all, with a note to try it again. I did. Pungent, acerbic and peaty (again) no depth or complexity, flat - just peaty. That's the nose. The taste is like blotting paper, dull. If this is the future of malt whisky then I'm going straight.

| | Caol Ila - Distillers Edition OB 1995 43%alc
"The Master Distiller has hand-selected a small number of casks for DOUBLE MATURING in dark Moscatel cask wood". A quietened Caol Ila, sweetened and more fruity than the norm, not much smoke neat but plenty with water. Andrew said it reminded him of Ardmore, with a flash of candy shop and a characteristically long finish but very cool, a worthwhile alternative Caol Ila. Flavour Map Ref: I9 Rich / Smoky

| | Caol Ila - Unpeated Style OB 8yo 64.9%alc.
Every year Caol Ila makes some malt with unpeated barley, a throwback form the days when distillery owners tried to keep distilleries working rather than just demolish them... An excellent dram, remarkably fruity and a huge highland style to it. Still has lots of Caol Ila character and hard to be persuaded that it's not peaty. Very long finish, better without water, which gives a bit of a boggy taste.

| | Caol Ila OB 18yo 43%alc. Bottling of the Year 2003
Loch Fyne Whiskies Bottling of the year 2003! Softer than the 12 with more wood influence, I like it but many prefer the big smokiness of the 12yo. This is more complex and better as a whisky but probably not a Caol Ila fan's fave. Tight and round. Apples & pears, floral, Parma violets, oak (lots), card, must, grass and a wee reek of old fish. Flavour Map Ref: G9 Rich / Smoky
[Blind tasting note from RJ during the SFWC:A full-blown western whisky, including germoline, diesel and a corridor of surgical spirit. Unusual levels of (clean) woodiness from the middle well into the long finish. SCORE 9/10] Details of our Bottling of the Year here...
