A Price Guide - 2nd Edition

A handy reference guide to prices realised at McTear's Glasgow Auction house over the past six years. Should be used judiciously when pricing a collectable, add buyer's premium of 15% and remember it is just one auction house. We need more price info like this, anyone doing one for eBay yet?

Rare Malts: Facts, Figures and Taste by Swedish malt whisky authority and enthusiast Ulf Buxrud was published on 9 November and launched the same day at a reception hosted in London by the world's most celebrated gunsmiths, James Purdey & Sons.

The luxuriously produced hardback book is a 176-page fully illustrated account of all the 36 whiskies featured in Diageo's legendary Rare Malts Selection series, and a detailed history of the whole series.

Each entry contains historical and technical data (some never published before) on each malt and its distillery. There is also an extensive scientific chapter on organoleptic whisky tasting.

The cover carries a photograph by Graeme Wallace of the old Port Ellen distillery.

The annual Rare Malts Selection series of unusual and limited edition malts was drawn from the dwindling output of distilleries closed long ago and from old stocks of working distilleries. It ran for ten years, from 1995 to 2005, when it was superseded by the Special Releases programme.

Guests at the launch were regaled with two of the featured Rare Malts: Caol Ila 23yo, and Banff 21yo.

An astonishing book. Or more correctly, an astonishing collection, one of the most complete collections of Scotch malt whisky bottles in the world.

A large format book, published 1999 & just short of 300 pages, and the print and paper quality is faultless.

Every serious collector of whiskies who has seen it has bought a copy on the spot. We immediately found it an essential reference work when discussing matters with our customers-particularly when identifying a bottle found in dad's cabinet.

A further 190 pages devoted to new Scotch malt additions to the collection plus a few Irish and (absolutely fascinating) American whiskies.

If you are happy with volume one then volume two is essential, no repetition or reworking. When I heard this was in production I was sceptical but have no hesitation recommending this.

The only book on whisky I've ever fully read, honest! Very witty.

A good whisky book should make you reach for a dram; in this case it's a dram of your very best.

Iain Banks is one of my two favourite writers but this book is more about him than the subject matter which is a shame.
