SHERRY TIGER! We've been watching the G&M Linkwood turn from mid-gold to darker and darker and now to mahogany. Got to try it again.

It's rich, ginger and fruity - raisins, wine gums and other estery notes, some soap too. The taste has lots of dried fruit, a hint of sherry cask and a very zesty swallow. Would pass off as a very much older whisky and truly excellent value.

Every year the team at Loch Fyne Whiskies discuss which whisky has fared the best when offering tastes to our customers in the shop, an easy sale on quality and value and a little unusual too.

Our customer's choice for 2006 is a single malt that describes itself on the label as "the gentle dram".

A Speyside whisky that has been largely ignored as a single malt, the new owners are now determined that this whisky be recognised for it's quality.

At 16 years it is sublime.

Tomintoul 16 has a soft sherry-sweetness about the nose, (fino sherry La Ina), some oak, black pepper, hardboard sawdust and speyside fruitiness. On the tongue it is soft, gentle (like it says) perfectly balanced with a fruity-spicy swallow. Best without water.

A rich and pleasing nose of bananas, esters, beer and ‘Bazooka Joes’. Chocolate, coffee, cocoa and soft estery flavours - short but juicy. Nice smoky finish. A highly rewarding dram.]

Already, from a distance, this whisky smells quite lovely! No surprises of what, sherry and vanilla, closer caramel and wine vinegar, waxy with a little must, matchbox.

A faultless mouthful, toast, a little oak, a hint of sherry-oak and with water a suplhury brimstone and oranges and syrup. A creamy if shortish finish that leaves a chocolate memory.

A good example of a medium-light Speyside malt. Slightly; flowery, peaty, nutty, clean, soothing.

Most enjoyable unchallenging.

A unique tasting whisky, neat it has the nose more akin to Springbank rather than Longrow, not as peaty as expected, more fruit boilings with finally a smoky swallow. A lovely whisky but not very Longrow.

Excellent, pleasant, well matured, mellow yet gingerish. Great value too.

A super smell from the bottle – a floral burst behind the cork. Here’s floral single malt, with a peppery-gingery character, a sweetie-shop of esters, solvent and pine essence, all bubbling about in the headspace of the glass.

In the mouth, it’s foremost floral and very, very pleasant, well-balanced, sweet and gingery, lightness pervades all over and it’s very enjoyable for it.

Water exposes cereal notes (mashed spuds) and a chewy meaty element.
