DONALD RETIRES!

After nearly five years of dedicated service, Donald R. Greeter has retired. The stalwart who has stood outside our door welcoming pilgrims with a dram has endured the weather and knocks of his profession long enough, his position has been taken by his cousin Hamish-from-the-Isles (but it’s okay he doesn’t drink).

Donald has done a remarkable job; in the last four and a half years he has collected thousands of pounds from visitors who have posed for the camera with him making him one of the most photographed icons in Scotland. All that he has collected has been passed on to local children’s groups and we look forward to Hamish continuing the good work.

Donald has accepted our offer of early retirement as we feel his best interests require it. Every evening at closing time he has been locked away in the shop and, to be honest, has suffered a little from the responsibility, he has fallen over a few times and broken both wrists - neither of which has properly healed, also there has been substantial damage to his liver.

Pictured are Donald and Hamish performing the "Gimhme th' Bhictuals" - (the passing of the water of life), which is the ancient transfer of responsibility ceremony as practiced by Greeters since their heraldic status was first recognised by the Chief of the Clan Mhollochs.
