Glengoyne 40yo ***updated***

'Glengoyne Launch Limited Edition 40 Years Old Highland Single Malt
UK Launch August 09
For the first time in its 175 year history, award-winning Glengoyne Distillery is to release its oldest, most valuable, and very best, Highland Single Malt: the Glengoyne 40 Years Old.
The embodiment of Glengoyne’s famed unpeated and authentic ‘Real Taste of Malt’, the natural strength 40 Years Old Highland Single Malt is regarded by the distillery to be one of the finest whiskies they have ever produced. Its superior quality and flavour reflecting Glengoyne’s long standing commitment and enthusiasm for their craft and heritage.
Every detail of the design and presentation of the Limited Edition Single Malt was carefully considered to reflect the outstanding character and craftsmanship of the Glengoyne 40 Years Old. Even the producer of the stunning hand blown crystal decanter, Glencairn Crystal, a well-respected independent Scottish family company, was specially selected for its shared values with Glengoyne.
The shape of the crystal decanter creates a strong visual feature of the 40 Years Old Single Malt’s dark copper colour, complemented by gold engraving. Each decanter’s individual number, engraved in the base, is accompanied by an etching of Scotland’s most beautiful distillery, reflecting up through the malt itself.
The 11 times lacquered piano-finished solid oak wood presentation box, complete with gold plates on the front and hand-stitched cream leather interior, further reinforces the excellent quality and showcases the rich, natural colour of the 40 Years Old Malt. An accompanying cream leather and gold foil traditionally bound book, personally signed by Distillery Manager, Robbie Hughes, provides tasting notes and detailed background on Glengoyne’s long and illustrious history as an independent distillery since 1833.
With a nose of red apples, crème brulee and strawberries and cream, the Glengoyne 40 Years Old offers a complex and oily mouth feel of ripe bananas, spiced plums, honey and cereal, before drying into grapefruit and soft oak, with a long and lingering dry finish.
From August just 250 crystal decanters of this unique and treasured Malt from Glengoyne’s rare whisky reserves will be available from specialist whisky outlets in the UK and worldwide, Domestic RRP £3,750.
Stylish diamond display plinths, designed to complement the bottle design and create maximum standout, will also be used to showcase the Glengoyne 40 Years Old in opinion-leading international luxury outlets.
Glengoyne Highland Single Malt is one of the leading premium malt whiskies in the world and has been distilled at Glengoyne distillery since 1833. The 40 Years Old Highland Single Malt joins a multi gold award-winning range, which includes the Single Malt 10 Years Old, 12 Years Old Cask Strength, 17 Years Old and 21 Years Old, as well as a number of limited edition single casks released each year.'

Bunnahabhain Toiteach

'This single malt embraces a powerful proposition: the foundation for a variation on the famous Bunnahabhain single Islay malt Scotch whisky. What if a touch of smoke from our peated malted barley was introduced in the distillation process? The Islay character is quite distinctive from that of the Bunnahabhain single malt , known for its gentle taste. Toiteach (pronounced Toch Chach - so that's clear then) means 'smoky' in Gaelic, reflecting the seeming contradiction that this peaty paradox represents.
This special bottling offers the connoisseur an opportunity to try something truly unique and beguiling in nature. The liquid has been masterfully distilled and quietly matured at the distillery, never for a moment leaving Islay during this process.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: A light golden hue glows from within.
Aroma: Charming peatiness with a subtle nose, prickling strength emanates from the dram.
Palate: Immediate warming peaty flavours drift towards a slightly sweet sherry influence with delicate peppery notes.
Finish: Good robust length with extremely pleasant aftertaste- beautifully peated Bunnahabhain single malt for the discerning palate!'
RRP £50 and extremely limited.

Taste - A wonderful balance of rich oak notes and sweet, fruity spice. Initially very intense with lots of oak tannin and mouth-coating wood flavour. After a few minutes a subtle vanilla sweetness and gentle fruity character develops (baked apple, rhubarb, ripe pears). The layers of flavour continue to unfold over a very long period meandering from oak to sweet to fruity to spicy and back again.

ANNOUNCEMENT!! Finally decided on our bottling of the year! It was whittled down from either Ardmore OB or An Cnoc 16 to Ledaig CC 1990.
All three are worthy of the accolade but the Ledaig wins on unusualness of taste and the unexpected suggestion.
The better sell of the three, our customers are very happy with it.

THE RIGHT WHISKY FOR YOU
As of now Loch Fyne Whiskies is to employ the
Malt Whisky Flavour Map that has been developed by Dave Broom and the experts at Diageo.
Within our Browse & Buy section grid references are starting to appear against bottlings which, when checked against the Flavour Map, quickly demonstrates how Light or Rich and how Smoky or Delicate a whisky is compared to ones you already know, so now you can explore LFW.co.uk (and the LFW Stock List) with more confidence. Whiskies that appear towards the outer edges of the Flavour Map will tend to have more single-minded character. The more a whisky moves towards the middle of the Flavour Map, the more it tends to have a combined balance of flavour characteristics.
Over the next few months we will be adding more references to make this a truly comprehensive resource.

A very well balanced dram on nose and taste with the An Cnoc style and power of a Big Hairy Highlander.
Round and mellow on the nose with citrus fruits and vanilla (Yankee oak) and liquorice (allsorts).
The mouth experience is sensational, immediately spreading to all parts in excellent balance, a significant pause then a huge warmth with a typical An Cnoc ginger swallow reminiscent of the fabled 21yo.
A very long hot spicy finish.
Ace whisky suited for a Clynelish fan or similar.

According to Cezanne - who still does the calligraphy in Campbeltown - this is 5.5 years in a refill bourdon and 1.5 in a fresh Gaja Barolo barrel a mere 12,120 bottles so [ahem], don't delay.
Straight from the bottle it's pretty grim, let it breath for 10 minutes sudoko or something.Once settled this is definitely one for the 'silly' peaty fans, a big powerful aroma of peat and used sump oil (from a grocery van).
To taste the wine hits first then the balance spreads over the tongue revealing malt and peat, a quiet swallow and long peppery finish.

New in to the shop today is a wonderful vatted (blended) malt, Blue Hanger 30yo.
3rd of the new individual vattings by one of the industry's great noses, Sir Douglas McIvor and well up to the best of his pickings.
Like Doug this whisky has a big oily nose and a faint whiff of spent matches, beguilingly fruity and very engaging.
To taste he is well balanced, slightly hot with a fruity-acetone swallow and a long oaky finish (that last bits not like Doug).
Ace chap and ace whisky.

Despite my less than kind comments on the first release of Ballechin we have sold a very significant amount on the basis of a taste here in the shop, the new variant is more peaty and softer so I suspect it will be another flyer.
The second limited (6,000) release of Edradour’s heavily peated variant, this time entirely matured in a Maderia cask presumably for 5 years (don’t let the age put you off).
The first edition has been very well received on tasting and this has more of what the first had.
More peat, more complexity and more sweetness, a huge mouthfeel.
Those who appreciated the younger Ardbegs will be impressed.

Batch 1 has been exclusively matured in Re-charred Sherry Butts for 10 years and is limited to 11000 bottles.
A glass brimful of aroma, briny and slightly musty - that reminds me of the 1919 - and an oily lemon note.
On the tongue, even neat it is soft and easy drinking, well balanced with a long finish, well done Frank!

CAPTION COMPETITION
Glengyle, Campbeltown's newest re-distillery celebrated it's third birthday at the weekend with press tours and a big party in one of the warehouses.
Presided over by Frank McHardy and his sidekick Stuart Robertson - here posing for our caption competition.
Built by Frank for J & A Mitchell, the owners of nearby Springbank, the revived Distillery is a neat simple affair using two stills scrounged form the old Ben Wyvis Distillery.
We were offered a plethora of samples but unfortunately from an unhelpful range of wine casks so it is difficult to asses the character of the new three year old whisky. So we will pass judgement of a wee sample that was given us in our goodie-bag...
Kilkerran (for that is the trade name for the single malt from Glengyle Distillery), 3yo, 46%:
This is a big, oily and waxy spirit, uncompromising and I suspect typical of the old heavy alleged Campbeltown style. Under all the heavy, wet, coal-smoke is fruitiness, tobacco and brine. The taste reflects it's new-born infancy, with a long weighty sulphur finish.
I look forward to trying it again in a couple of years time.
For those planning ahead, Kilkerran will not be available until it is 8 years old.

At long last we have the repackaged Bowmore 12yo to compliment the 18yo and 15yo Darkest released late last year.
This was actually our favourite of the 3 when we visited the distillery in February.

As part of an ongoing LFW.CO.UK development we are starting to attach our Joynson's blind-tasting notes from seven years of the Scottish Field Merchant's Challenge - the whisky competition of which we have the most respect.
Every two months seven shop-keepers, hoteliers and un-noteworthy drunks (i.e. not great ‘experts’ like Jacko or ‘Bible’ Jim) are sent 16 or so numbered samples - we have no idea if they are malts, blend or what.
We assess each one, the numbers are crunched and comments edited by the enthusiast and creator Will Gardner for publication in Scottish Field Magazine. Now his website whiskychallenge.com is live with (so far) the last two years (moderated) results from all the judges, please go and investigate while we start to put Richard's unabridged comments throughout this site.

Loch Fyne Whiskies has been described as 'the biggest whisky shop in Sweden' (!) and for many years we have been shipping to Sweden with no problems or disappointed customers. Breakages are guaranteed by us and the number of disappearances is negligible, most are replaced by us.
Two options for shipping to Sweden, Royal Mail Small Air packet and ParcelForce/Schenker.
For three of less bottles the most economic and successful option is Royal Mail, this has a 2kg limit so we send each bottle separately and to avoid interest of 'hostile' parties, two days apart, this has been very successful for many years, and fast - for example shipments sent on Monday tend to be delivered to your door on Friday.
After negotiating a new rate, ParcelForce is now an economic option for four or more bottles, however as a single shipment they are more vulnerable to 'interference'. As of January 2007 we understand the delivery agent is Schenker and that they probably don't deliver to private addresses, they will write and ask you to collect, please let us know how it goes.
Some may prefer to utilise the £10 each / single bottle option for more than three bottles, you have the choice as you check out.

UK Customers: After 6 years at £6.90 we have to increase our shipping charge (to £7.50), we held off through the Christmas rush but now have to bite the ParcelForce bullet.
To help ease the pain (ahem) of this we are offering a FREE Haggis* on all UK orders over £65.00 just in time for your Burns Supper!
*whilst stocks last. A real Scotch Haggis, in a skin, in brine, in a tin.Cooking instructions inside paper label. Minimum order £65.00 excluding shipping charge. Deliveries to UK addresses only. Loch Fyne Whisky available here

I find myself alone in the upper library, Rogers has gone off to find more air freshener for the dog, leaving me to tackle a new bottle of Caol Ila, unassisted.
I failed on the removal of the tin capsule that protects us from the stopper below.
Have you tried to remove one of these things? Blazes! There is a small 'v' nick about the perforated circumference that the cap manufacturer must have told the bottler makes removal easy - absolute tosh!.....
